Here is a very simple and adorable craft that’s easy to make with your kids (or by yourself, like I did!) A few months ago I had seen a photo of one these adorable Cactus Rock Gardens floating around the internet. While cleaning up the yard the other day I found a few rocks that would be perfect for this simple craft.
Supplies:
Paper plate
Water to rinse your brush
Paper towel to dry you brush
A few shades of green acrylic paint (I use the cheapie paint from Ac Moore or Michaels)
White, grey and brown acrylic paint
Paint brush: one medium sized to coat your rock and one with a smaller tip for small details
Glass candle holder from the dollar store
Rocks to use as filler
-Start by giving your rocks a quick rinse in the sink to wash away any loose dirt and then give the a pat dry with a towel.
-On your paper plate squeeze a small amount of the green paint you want to use for your base color. (I choose 2 shades for this, one for the larger rock and another for the smaller rocks)
-Paint a good coat of the base color on your rock and allow to dry (I did 2 coats, giving drying time in between each coat).
-When your base coat is dry, squeeze a small amount of the color you choose for you Cactus spines. This is where you can get creative! You can see my examples above but there are so may variations you could do, spikes, tiny cactus flowers, polka dots etc…
-While waiting for your cactus rocks to dry fill the glass candle holder 3/4 full with the filer rocks.
-When your rocks are completely dry you can arrange then in your glass candle holder. You will want to nestle then into the filler rocks a bit so they are secure.
I hope you enjoy this fun craft tutorial!

This looks like something my elderly residents can easily do and I am always looking for easy, fun, crafts for them that aren’t childish. Thanks! I hope you have other craft ideas that I can share with them.
