Have you been looking for the perfect apple crisp recipe? I must admit, I think I may make the world’s best apple crisp!
Fall is my absolute favorite time of year, so Owen and I went apple picking at Berlin Orchards on Thursday. The weather was gorgeous and we had the whole orchard to ourselves! After we picked our apples we visited the animals, strolled though the pumpkins and picked up some delicious cider donuts to bring home. So now that we have we have way more apples than we could possibly need it’s apple crisp time. So I guess I will share my top secret recipe with all of you.
World’s Best Apple Crisp:
4 lbs apples (I used a variety of 6 types of apples we had picked)
Zest and juice of one lemon
Zest and juice of one orange
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup all purpose flour
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
Topping:
1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 light brown sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup old fashion oats
2 sticks cold butter, diced
1/4 tsp lemon zest
1/4 tsp orange zest
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350
Core and cut the apples into slices (I do it the lazy way and leave on the skins, they give it a nice texture)
Place the fruit in a large bowl and add the zests, juices, sugar, 1/4 cup flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Mix with a large spoon and coat the apples well.
*For the topping:
Combine the flour, sugars, salt, oatmeal, and butter in the bowl. You can use a pastry cutter, electric mixer with paddle attachment or mix with you hands like me until all the topping ingredients are incorporated.
Pour into a 9×12 baking pan or 2 loaf pans. Cover the top(s) completely with the topping mix. Bake for 1 hour at 350. Depending on the thickness of you apples you may need to add a few minutes (I had to add 20) But be sure to keep an eye on your topping so it does not burn. If your apples are not tender enough but your topping is already golden brown you can cover the pan with tin foil to continue baking. You can poke the apples with a fork to make sure they are a soft texture. The apples will be very soft but the topping will be chewy and delicious! Serve warm and enjoy!
